Did Obama REALLY Betray Great Britain to Russia?!?

This isn’t confirmed… as of right now one British newspaper who has seen some WikiLeaks cables is claiming this is the case, but apparently they have cables that prove Obama handed over British nuclear secrets to convince Russia to sign off on a missile defense treaty. Even worse, Obama asked Britain if they could do this, and when they said no they did it anyway.

From Andrew Roberts at The Daily Beast:

If it turns out that it is WikiLeaks and not the State Department that is right, this represents a clear violation of the agreement made between Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt at Hyde Park in June 1942 over Anglo-American nuclear cooperation. The idea that any American president would browbeat or simply ignore a British government and give U.K.  nuclear secrets to the Russians in order to secure a treaty with Moscow would be unconscionable to Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson, Ford, probably Carter, certainly Reagan, both Bushes and probably Clinton too. Yet Obama, who has treated Britain with a thinly veiled sneer throughout his presidency, has not only countenanced but actually done it.

If true, this could be the worst thing I’ve seen Obama do. Unconscionable is much more polite than how I’d word it…

This is something that has nothing to do with your partisanship or ideology. Betraying secret information about the national security of an ally, in exchange for an agreement (that there have been rumblings Russia may renege on even) with a country who has been anything but trustworthy… that is just plain inexcusable.

  1. If this is true this is some very major shit. Like you said, Solomon, this isn’t something one side or the other could argue, this is a breach of trust between major allies.
I’m not going to jump to conclusions yet, but (if true) this destroys any confidence I had in Obama to lead this country. I’m hoping it isn’t true.

  2. Worst thing he’s ever done? While I can definitely understand it being interpreted as a betrayal of trust, all Obama did was provide the Russians with serial numbers of the British Trident sub-based nuclear weapons system. The Russians already know they have them, and about how many they have, they just wanted an exact number. I again agree that this is something that should have been discussed with the British first, but it really does not matter very much in a geopolitical sense–and definitely not enough to be called out in such egregious terms.

  3. This is frustrating. I cannot find a link to the Wikileak documents. Everyone talks about them, but no one is showing the actual documents – its just and endless series of links that go nowhere. Does anyone out there know where these documents are? That would help clear this up.

I am concerned that Obama just might sell out an ally in a serious or damaging way for political reasons. If so, we should know about it. I am quickly losing confidence in Obama. Some things are starting feel bad about this administration.

My concern is that the public will turn against the Democrats in 2012, vote them out and once again leave us with the horror of 2001-2006 all over, i.e., Republicans once again controlling everything and inflicting massive damage on the economy and our way of life.

Good grief – where are the pragmatists and centrists? Where is the intelligent opposition?
